Hello Little Flappies!! These penguins are sad suffers from an oil spill but lucky recipients of knitted sweaters. The oil from a spill destroys the natural oils that cover penguins’ feathers and keeps the birds warm in icy waters. Penguins also preen themselves, and when covered in oil from a spill will ingest the toxic oil and die.

These sweaters both keep the penguins warm and stop them from cleaning their feathers! If you can knit, the New Zealand yarn company Skeinz has asked for knitters to make sweaters for the penguins caught in the October 5, 2011 Tauranga oil spill, New Zealand’s worst environmental disaster.  You can get a pattern for the sweaters from the Skeinz website here, and read a little more about this clever practice here.
